The 81st Venice International Film Festival opened with the award of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement to Hollywood actress Sigourney Weaver. Weaver dedicated her award to the people of Venice, alluding to MOSE, the flood control system created around the city. During the opening ceremony, a video message was presented by director James Cameron to Weaver congratulating her on the award and praising her flawless work ethic. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, a Warner Bros. horror comedy fantasy film, also premiered at the festival.
