Kuwaiti actor, Hayat Al-Fahad, has announced his boycott of Netflix after it aired the controversial Indian film, “Goat Life”, which has been accused of being insulting to Islam, Muslims, Arabs and attempting to tarnish the image of Saudi Arabia. The film sparked widespread upset on social media owing to its depiction of what many saw as the negative aspects of the Saudi kafeel (sponsorship) system. The sponsorship system in Saudi requires an employer to bring in an employee, who then becomes the sponsor's responsibility for everything related to their residency and employment. The director of “Goat Life” added a disclaimer at the start of the film stating that “this film does not intend to offend any country, people, society or ethnicity”. However, many Twitter users deemed the depiction of the kafeel system in the film inappropriate. “Goat Life” tells the story of a young Indian man named Najeeb who travels to Saudi Arabia in search of work only to find himself lured into a situation where he is forced to stay in the desert for years, taking care of goats.
