The Saudi Arabian film "Noura", supported by the Red Sea Fund of the Red Sea International Film Festival, has made history by being selected for the official competition at the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, in the "Un Certain Regard" section. This makes it the first Saudi Arabian film to achieve this globally recognized accolade, marking a significant advancement in the world of filmmaking from the country. Directed by Tawfiq Al-Zaidi, the film tells the story of Noura in the 1990s in Saudi Arabia, who has to escape her world to achieve her dreams. The movie was completely filmed in the historic city of Al-Ula. This achievement highlights the effective role of the Red Sea Film Festival Foundation in empowering rising talent in the region, offering support for over 250 films through various programs, including the Red Sea Fund, covering a range of films from shorts to animations. Several of these films have already won international awards. Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Frémaux praised the important role that the Red Sea International Film Festival has to play in the cinematic scene of the region, adding that it is proof of Saudi Arabia's interest in the industry. Jumana Rachid, chair of the board of trustees at the Red Sea Film Festival Foundation, called the movie selection at Cannes an acknowledgment of Saudi Arabia's rich talent in filmmaking and the pivotal role of the foundation in promoting its emerging filmmakers. Mohamed Al-Turki, CEO of the Red Sea International Film Festival, said that the movie's acceptance at Cannes represented a historical moment in recognition of the work of the foundation, adding that he was proud of the selection of Tawfiq Al-Zaidi's film.
