The Egyptian Film Critics Association, a member of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI),has announced the winners of the annual critics award for the best Egyptian film and best foreign film screened in Egypt during 2023. The film "Foie Foie Foie!" by director Omar Hilal won the Egyptian film award, while the foreign film award went to "Anatomy of a Fall" by French director Justine Triet. The jury noted a rise in the prominence of cinema of the author this year, as all eight films nominated in the two categories were written and directed by their authors. However, the jury also pointed out a visible decline in the government's interest in cinema and the arts in general, which they interpreted as hindering young filmmakers with increasingly complex financial costs. The annual critics award is a longstanding tradition held by the Egyptian Film Critics Association, which has been organizing it regularly since its establishment in 1972. The award highlights the best in local and global cinema to enrich the cinematic culture among critics, practitioners and the wider audience.
