Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, has left for Kuwait to offer condolences on the death of the country’s ruler, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. The late emir died at the age of 91 in September, and his successor, Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, was sworn in as new Emir in October. The trip is the first overseas visit by Prince Mohammed since the coronavirus pandemic began, and it follows months of speculation about his health and whereabouts. There had been reports that he was receiving medical treatment abroad after undergoing surgery in August. However, he was filmed on state television playing tennis and participating in government meetings in recent weeks. His departure for Kuwait coincides with heightened tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and there is speculation that his visit could lead to efforts to resolve the conflict.
