Taylor Swift has been named as Time magazine’s Person of the Year. Swift beat eight other finalists, including the British Royal family, Russian President Vladimir Putin and President-elect Donald Trump, to win the accolade. The magazine’s choice reflected both her musical achievements in 2019, which included well-received new songs, the release of an album and a successful world tour, as well as her advocacy on behalf of musicians. Her public disagreements with Apple and Spotify over their revenue-sharing models, which she said were leaving artists struggling, arguably led the streaming services to adjust their practices. In addition, Swift won a sexual assault case against a former radio host earlier this year, which was seen as an important victory for those opposing abuse in the entertainment industry.
