"Hawjoun" - Saudi cinema's haunting debut in Jeddah.

The third annual Red Sea International Film Festival kicked off with the screening of the Saudi film "Hojun", based on a popular novel of the same name by Saudi writer Ibrahim Abbas. The festival's opening with a Saudi film highlights the Kingdom's growing interest in and support of the film industry. Directed by Iraqi filmmaker Yaser Al-Yasiri, "Hojun" explores the fantasy world of genies and humans, blending traditional Saudi folklore with modern themes. The film's special effects impressed with the intricate and detailed representations of genie powers, although some scenes were criticized for weak execution and CGI. The film's lead actor, Saudi newcomer Baraa Alam has attracted attention for his impressive and authentic performance as the genie Hojun, setting himself up as a rising star in the Arab film industry. "Hojun" speaks to the Kingdom's efforts to expand its cultural sphere, with new cinemas opening up across the country and Saudi filmmakers actively contributing to the film industry.
