Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2 has a new release date, and it may end up with a completely new, non Dead-Reckoningey title.
As reported by the Hollywood Reporter, the sequel to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning will now release on May 23, 2025. The delay is due largely to the still ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. But that’s not all that’s happening to this movie. Paramount also seems to have dropped the movie’s original Dead Reckoning Part 2 title.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 was released earlier this year and while it was critically acclaimed, it wasn’t the commercial smash that Paramount Pictures may have been waiting for. The first movie also ended on something of a cliffhanger, meaning fans are going to have to wait even longer to find out what happened.
Whatever it ends up being called, the next Mission: Impossible movie is penciled in for a May 23, 2025.
The early Mission: Impossible movies were products of a different time, one that Francis Fukuyama called “the end of history.” There was a moral ambivalence that reflected the post-Cold War milieu. In Brian De Palma’s Mission: Impossible, the hero of the original show, Jim Phelps (Jon Voight),betrays the ideals of a country that had moved past him. By his own admission, co-screenwriter Robert Towne peppered Mission: Impossible 2 with “some chicken-shit misogynism” for flavor.
