Egyptian singer, composer, and actor born Kandeil Mohamed Hassan to a music-loving family in Shubra, Cairo. After high school, he joined the Institute of Arabic Music under the...Read more care of the director of the institute at the time, the composer Ibrahim Shafiq, where he studied the oud. He started singing in 1942 and had a very successful career that spanned over 50 years and sang over 800 songs. Over his career he appeared in about twenty films such as Conflict in the Nile (1959) and Beach of Secrets (1958). In 1996, he had a stroke in the coronary artery, and traveled to the United States where he underwent a successful surgery. His final work was singing the opening credits for the series The Friends (2002). He passed away on 9 June 2004.
