Syrian actress born Fatema Turkan Shawkat in Daraa, South of Damascus, in 1930. She was discovered by director Atef Salem, who introduced her in his film A Date with the Unknown...Read more (1959) opposite Omar Sharif, who gave her the name Hala Shawkat. Her works in theater include Sour Grapes and The Taming of the Shrew. She also worked in over 12 Syrian, Algerian, and Egyptian films. She has hundreds of works in television including Al-Khawali (2000),Levantine Days (1992),and Nights of Al-Salihiyah (2004). She passed away on 28 April 2007 in a home for the elderly in Damascus.
