A Syrian director, writer, and actor, born in Latakia. He worked in his early years in the studios of the Political Department of the Syrian Arab Army, before travelling to Germany...Read more to study cinema. In the early seventies, he moved to the General Organization for Cinema and made his first documentary film, In a Slum (1972) which won the Special Jury Prize at the Eighth Moscow International Festival in 1973. He also made a number of other documentaries and two fiction films. He practiced film criticism in press and radio, and for several years he was the president of the Film Club in Damascus. He taught cinema at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts in Damascus. He held the position of General Director of the General Film Organization, editor-in-chief of Al-Hayat Film Magazine, and director of the Damascus Film Festival between 1989 and 2000. He is known for Grendizer (1977),Words on Paper (2014),and Volition (1982).
