The General Entertainment Authority (GEA) in Saudi Arabia has appointed 19 members to the committee for the "Golden Pen Award for the Most Influential Literature". The award is spread across four categories: novel, screenplay, producer, and director. One of the members appointed in the novel category is the renowned Saudi Arabian writer, Abdou Khal. Known for his work that delves into social, cultural, and political themes, Khal's famous novels include "Throw Sparks" and "The Holy City". Other appointed writers include Badria Al-Bishr, an award-winning Saudi Arabian novelist and critic, and Saud Alsanousi, a Kuwaiti novelist and winner of the International Prize for Arabic Fiction. Also appointed are Egyptian novelist and screenwriter, Ahmed Mourad, and Saudi Arabian writer and screenwriter, Mufrej Al-Majed. The judges also include Tarek El-Shenawy, an Egyptian film critic with more than 40 years of experience and author of over 30 books on cinema, and Tamer Ibrahim, an Egyptian writer who specializes in horror literature and has written popular novels such as "The Maker of Darkness" and "The 23rd Night". The award was initiated in 2020 by the GEA to celebrate Arabic literature and recognize the works of influential writers, screenwriters, producers, and directors. The committee members are tasked with selecting the top works in each category and awarding them accordingly. The winners of the Golden Pen Award will be announced at a ceremony in Riyadh, in the presence of prominent figures from around the Arab world. The GEA aims to support the culture and arts sector in Saudi Arabia and promote cultural exchange and creativity within the country and the wider region.
